Town Hall Meeting log for 2009-11-12 (UTC)

[Weekly OSGrid Town Hall Meeting @ Bade Plaza]

The meeting started about 15 minutes late due to problems restarting Bade Plaza.

[2009/11/11 16:15] Dave Coyle: ok, so everyone made it over from Wright Plaza
[2009/11/11 16:15] Trex Blessed: looks like all of os grid :-P
[2009/11/11 16:15] Dave Coyle: so we can get started. i have a few opening remarks, then we'll open the floor for whatever you want to discuss.
[2009/11/11 16:16] Starky Rubble bang the gavel
[2009/11/11 16:16] Dave Coyle: First, thank you all for coming. This is the 3rd OSGrid Town Hall Meeting we've held. All OSGrid users are welcome.
[2009/11/11 16:16] Trex Blessed: poor gavel
[2009/11/11 16:16] Dave Coyle: The purpose of this meeting is to share some information about what's going on on the grid.
[2009/11/11 16:16] Dave Coyle: and find out what people are enjoying or concerned with
[2009/11/11 16:16] Dave Coyle: what works and what's broken
[2009/11/11 16:17] Dave Coyle: and how the grid can be improved
[2009/11/11 16:17] Dave Coyle: I posted a log from last week's meeting on the wiki
[2009/11/11 16:17] Dave Coyle: http://osgrid.org/wiki/TownHallMeeting
[2009/11/11 16:17] Dave Coyle: (the osgrid wiki, not the opensim wiki)
[2009/11/11 16:17] Dave Coyle: also you can join the "OSGrid Town Hall Meeting" group to get meeting announcements and links to meeting logs
[2009/11/11 16:17] Starky Rubble: Ahhh kewl
[2009/11/11 16:17] Gialana Questi: eyahh
[2009/11/11 16:17] Dave Coyle: (though group IM seemed to be broken for me today. sorry)
[2009/11/11 16:17] Gialana Questi: yeah
[2009/11/11 16:18] Dave Coyle: This week I'm going to hold the meeting to one hour.
[2009/11/11 16:18] Trex Blessed: darn
[2009/11/11 16:18] Gialana Questi: k
[2009/11/11 16:18] Dave Coyle: We'll continue to hold these meetings weekly, so if there's something you want to discuss further we can do so then.
[2009/11/11 16:18] Dave Coyle: and just a reminder: this meeting is for osgrid-specific topics
[2009/11/11 16:18] Dave Coyle: there's also an opensim developmers meeting each tuesday at 15:00 UTC in wright plaza
[2009/11/11 16:19] Dave Coyle: those meetings are open, though geared for development topics
[2009/11/11 16:19] Adelle Fitzgerald: 19:00UTC Dave, for the dev meeting
[2009/11/11 16:19] Dave Coyle: some website improvements were made over the past week , specifically around password resets and donation tracking.
[2009/11/11 16:19] Dave Coyle: ah, right, doh!
[2009/11/11 16:19] Dave Coyle: stupid math
[2009/11/11 16:19] Adelle Fitzgerald: hehe
[2009/11/11 16:19] Dave Coyle: donation trackers on the website hadn't been updated in a while, but are now up-to-date as of yesterday
[2009/11/11 16:20] Dave Coyle: for those who may not know, OSGird, Inc., which officially operates the core grid infrastructure and Plaza regions, is a registered California Non-Porfit Public Benefit Corporations
[2009/11/11 16:20] Dave Coyle: and relies exclusively on donations and volunteers to operate
[2009/11/11 16:20] Dave Coyle: new stuff.
[2009/11/11 16:20] Dave Coyle: ...
[2009/11/11 16:21] Dave Coyle: there's a new 4x4 megaregion up on one of the plaza boxes
[2009/11/11 16:21] Dave Coyle: Vehicle Load Tesst
[2009/11/11 16:21] Dave Coyle: for your boating, flying, and otehr vehicle enjoyment
[2009/11/11 16:21] Dave Coyle: and finally...
[2009/11/11 16:21] Greybeard Thinker: sorry we're late all.
[2009/11/11 16:21] Starky Rubble: Hola GB
[2009/11/11 16:21] Greybeard Thinker: Starky
[2009/11/11 16:21] Dave Coyle: i put together a page [ http://osgrid.org/wiki/Infrastructure [ listing what central infrastructre is operated by OSGrid
[2009/11/11 16:21] Dave Coyle: beyond that, everything is operated by users
[2009/11/11 16:21] Oddball Otoole: np grey, we're just warming up
[2009/11/11 16:21] Dave Coyle: in fact, almost all servers attached to the grid are managed by users
[2009/11/11 16:21] Eryn Galen: hi Oddy
[2009/11/11 16:22] Nebadon Izumi: we might rename "vehicle load test" to something more creative and in line with plaza naming
[2009/11/11 16:22] Dave Coyle: so that's something to keep in mind when gauging the relative stability of osgrid to otehr virtual worlds
[2009/11/11 16:22] Oddball Otoole: Crash test plaza?
[2009/11/11 16:22] Dave Coyle: and with that, the floor is yours....
[2009/11/11 16:22] Nebadon Izumi: Deep plaza is also up now
[2009/11/11 16:22] Greybeard Thinker: may I make a suggestion regarding the UGAIM servers?
[2009/11/11 16:22] Nebadon Izumi: its a 16 region mega
[2009/11/11 16:22] Nebadon Izumi: no real plans for it yet
[2009/11/11 16:22] Nebadon Izumi: but its up and running
[2009/11/11 16:22] Nebadon Izumi: as is Stats Plaza
[2009/11/11 16:23] Dave Coyle: oh, and regarding time... we'll go one hour from when we started. so 53 minutes from now.
[2009/11/11 16:23] Kally Rakan: have they been added to the login screen neb?
[2009/11/11 16:23] Nebadon Izumi: which appropriatly will display nothing but stats about the grid and plazas
[2009/11/11 16:23] Dave Coyle: greybeard: go for it
[2009/11/11 16:23] Nebadon Izumi: not yet no
[2009/11/11 16:23] Greybeard Thinker: ty
[2009/11/11 16:23] Greybeard Thinker: I suggest we get them all onto their own boxes as soon as possible
[2009/11/11 16:23] Nebadon Izumi: once things get going in the new regions a bit more we will post about them
[2009/11/11 16:23] Nebadon Izumi: not while they are being built though
[2009/11/11 16:23] Greybeard Thinker: with a regular watch and reboot schedule.
[2009/11/11 16:24] Dave Coyle: greybeard: why?
[2009/11/11 16:24] Nebadon Izumi: Greybear as soon as you can donate 7 more servers we will
[2009/11/11 16:24] Nebadon Izumi: hehe
[2009/11/11 16:24] Dave Coyle: the box they're on now is already overpowered
[2009/11/11 16:24] Greybeard Thinker: they seem to be a bit flaky lately
[2009/11/11 16:24] Nebadon Izumi: that has nothing to do with hardware Greybeard
[2009/11/11 16:24] Kally Rakan: do the Stats Plaza display ping the other plazas and show if they're up or not? As far as that is possbile atm :)
[2009/11/11 16:25] Nebadon Izumi: no it just shows statistical data about the hardware at the moment
[2009/11/11 16:25] Kally Rakan: ok
[2009/11/11 16:25] Key Gruin: lol sorry Grey
[2009/11/11 16:25] Dave Coyle: memory usage, cpu usage, that kind os stuff
[2009/11/11 16:25] Greybeard Thinker: then why does at least the asset server seem to need rebooting so often?
[2009/11/11 16:25] Kally Rakan: I can foresee that plaza being a monitor nervecenter :)
[2009/11/11 16:25] Nebadon Izumi: Greybeard the asset server rarely gets restarted
[2009/11/11 16:25] Nebadon Izumi: where are you getting this info from?
[2009/11/11 16:26] Nebadon Izumi: it gets restarted maybe once a month
[2009/11/11 16:26] Nebadon Izumi: if that
[2009/11/11 16:26] Dave Coyle: kally: yeah, it would be great to collect more info
[2009/11/11 16:26] Dave Coyle: what's up, what's down
[2009/11/11 16:26] Greybeard Thinker: they have been restarted a few times lately Neb.
[2009/11/11 16:26] Nebadon Izumi: no they havent
[2009/11/11 16:26] Dave Coyle: what's running slow, what's smooth as silk
[2009/11/11 16:26] Nebadon Izumi: because im the only person who can restart assets
[2009/11/11 16:26] Nebadon Izumi: i think id know
[2009/11/11 16:26] Starky Rubble: heh
[2009/11/11 16:26] Greybeard Thinker: then I have been missinformed?
[2009/11/11 16:26] Nebadon Izumi: apparently
[2009/11/11 16:26] Trex Blessed: is it possable to link the Region Listing to some type of selectable teleport system in the plazas?
[2009/11/11 16:27] Greybeard Thinker: by Hiro?
[2009/11/11 16:27] Nebadon Izumi: the asset server is rarely restarted
[2009/11/11 16:27] Starky Rubble: miscommunicated maybe
[2009/11/11 16:27] Nebadon Izumi: i dont know Hiro doesnt have access to restart the asset server
[2009/11/11 16:27] Greybeard Thinker: OK
[2009/11/11 16:27] Greybeard Thinker: tx
[2009/11/11 16:27] Nebadon Izumi: he can start the User / inventory and message server
[2009/11/11 16:27] Greybeard Thinker: ahhh
[2009/11/11 16:27] Nebadon Izumi: but not assets
[2009/11/11 16:27] Greybeard Thinker: then maybe that is the flaky one then.
[2009/11/11 16:27] Nebadon Izumi: right now only Adam and I can
[2009/11/11 16:27] Nebadon Izumi: and he always asks me to
[2009/11/11 16:28] Nebadon Izumi: but even the other servers
[2009/11/11 16:28] Nebadon Izumi: we restart them once a week
[2009/11/11 16:28] Kally Rakan: possibly inventory since it can get hammered when tracking down some recent bugs?
[2009/11/11 16:28] Nebadon Izumi: but usually they dont need it
[2009/11/11 16:28] Nebadon Izumi: i just do it to keep everythign smooth
[2009/11/11 16:28] Nebadon Izumi: i can not recall the last time the back end servers crashed
[2009/11/11 16:28] Nebadon Izumi: its been months
[2009/11/11 16:29] Greybeard Thinker: OK, it may need a revision of thinking there Neb
[2009/11/11 16:29] Dave Coyle: trex: there used to be one of those. but i haven't seen it around in a while.
[2009/11/11 16:29] Dave Coyle: trex: it's a good idea though
[2009/11/11 16:29] Dave Coyle: is there one in Lbsa?
[2009/11/11 16:29] Nebadon Izumi: Greybeard what evidence do you have that its the servers that are the problem?
[2009/11/11 16:29] Kally Rakan: I thought there was one
[2009/11/11 16:29] Nebadon Izumi: or are you just assuming?
[2009/11/11 16:29] Trex Blessed: think it may help out witht he lack of search
[2009/11/11 16:29] Greybeard Thinker: just a hunch really Neb
[2009/11/11 16:30] Trex Blessed: they is one for the plazas
[2009/11/11 16:30] Trex Blessed: there
[2009/11/11 16:30] Nebadon Izumi: ok, well i can tell you going by the stats
[2009/11/11 16:30] Greybeard Thinker: but continual asset problems
[2009/11/11 16:30] Nebadon Izumi: the servers are running fine
[2009/11/11 16:30] Kally Rakan: but it might need permissions looked at since scripts are disabled
[2009/11/11 16:30] Nebadon Izumi: thats likely something with the simulator your in then
[2009/11/11 16:30] Nebadon Izumi: all assets 1st pass through simulator
[2009/11/11 16:30] Nebadon Izumi: you never pull assets directly from asset server to viewer
[2009/11/11 16:30] Nebadon Izumi: so likely your problem is with the simulator your in
[2009/11/11 16:30] Greybeard Thinker: I remember you explaining that to me yesterday.
[2009/11/11 16:30] Ernie Seriman: oh I did not know that
[2009/11/11 16:31] Nebadon Izumi: yes assets are cached on the simulator
[2009/11/11 16:31] Ernie Seriman: does that mean I could make everyone in my sim appear to wear different clothes?
[2009/11/11 16:31] Nebadon Izumi: via Flotsam cache
[2009/11/11 16:31] Nebadon Izumi: then passed to you
[2009/11/11 16:31] Greybeard Thinker: I also found some console commands not yet implemented
[2009/11/11 16:31] Oddball Otoole: Maybe a sort of hot-spots-lm-giver-thingy on the plazas?
[2009/11/11 16:31] Nebadon Izumi: so if your having constant asset issues i say check the regions
[2009/11/11 16:31] Eryn Galen: good idea Oddy
[2009/11/11 16:31] Nebadon Izumi: that is likely the cause
[2009/11/11 16:31] Nebadon Izumi: ya we could do that Oddball
[2009/11/11 16:31] Nebadon Izumi: we have tried before
[2009/11/11 16:31] Nebadon Izumi: but regions poof so fast
[2009/11/11 16:32] Starky Rubble: well there have been OS changes too that could affect user experiences in ways that might feel like that altho we seem to be in a good path ATN (knock on Silicon).
[2009/11/11 16:32] Greybeard Thinker: I trie clearing my region flotsam cache last night
[2009/11/11 16:32] Kally Rakan: greybeard, are you getting any flotsam cache messages on the console?
[2009/11/11 16:32] Nebadon Izumi: its hard to keep those things updated
[2009/11/11 16:32] Greybeard Thinker: to no avail.
[2009/11/11 16:32] Nebadon Izumi: it could be network issues at the ISP perhaps
[2009/11/11 16:32] Dave Coyle: ernie: if you operate a region you can do all sorts of funny business
[2009/11/11 16:32] Trex Blessed: there once was a LM forest in wright but scripts turned off so nothing came out
[2009/11/11 16:32] Dave Coyle: not that one should
[2009/11/11 16:32] Nebadon Izumi: or perhaps the router from your ISP to the asset server
[2009/11/11 16:32] Nebadon Izumi: perhaps the route has issues
[2009/11/11 16:32] Nebadon Izumi: you could try a trace route
[2009/11/11 16:32] Kally Rakan: if you do see messages, check that you actually have it enabled. The default is no messages I believe
[2009/11/11 16:32] Greybeard Thinker: I keep getting EOC marker not found. Codestream is corrupted. consloe messages
[2009/11/11 16:32] Nebadon Izumi: and see if latency is a problem
[2009/11/11 16:32] Ernie Seriman: dave: I can see how it'd massively reduce the load/cost of the asset server, but I'd also worry about dodgy regions messing me up :)
[2009/11/11 16:33] Nebadon Izumi: Greybeard that sounds like mono issues
[2009/11/11 16:33] Nebadon Izumi: is it x64 by chance?
[2009/11/11 16:33] Greybeard Thinker: my regions run on a 1Gbps network connection.
[2009/11/11 16:33] Adelle Fitzgerald: Greybeard, that is an issue to do with the CSJ2K decoder, its not asset related
[2009/11/11 16:33] Dave Coyle: ernie: the asset server isn't loaded much to be honest.
[2009/11/11 16:33] Kally Rakan: cj2k
[2009/11/11 16:33] Adelle Fitzgerald: its a simulator issue
[2009/11/11 16:33] Nebadon Izumi: ya our asset server is snoozing
[2009/11/11 16:33] Dave Coyle: http://assets.osgrid.org/stats
[2009/11/11 16:33] Nebadon Izumi: honestly
[2009/11/11 16:33] Greybeard Thinker: and my server is win dotnet 2003 enterprise edition.
[2009/11/11 16:33] Dave Coyle: or see the graphs in Stats Plaza
[2009/11/11 16:33] Nebadon Izumi: the asset server is not being taxed at all
[2009/11/11 16:33] Adelle Fitzgerald: Greybeard, we are all having CSJ2K issues at present
[2009/11/11 16:34] Nebadon Izumi: ya ive seen those messages too
[2009/11/11 16:34] Oddball Otoole: do we?? oh.
[2009/11/11 16:34] Greybeard Thinker: hehehe ty Adelle
[2009/11/11 16:34] Nebadon Izumi: but generally its not an issue
[2009/11/11 16:34] Monerda Skute whispers: what is CSJ2K please?
[2009/11/11 16:34] Kally Rakan: the jpeg2000 code used to decode assets is flaky
[2009/11/11 16:34] Key Gruin: so you're running NET, not mono Grey correct?
[2009/11/11 16:34] Starky Rubble: (majik)
[2009/11/11 16:34] Greybeard Thinker: yes Key.
[2009/11/11 16:34] Adelle Fitzgerald: its manifesting itself mainly in avatar bakes not rezzing properly, but that is really an opensim issue, not an osgrid issue
[2009/11/11 16:34] Nebadon Izumi: CSJ2k is Jpeg200 decoder
[2009/11/11 16:34] Greybeard Thinker: a win server.
[2009/11/11 16:34] Monerda Skute: thanks Neb
[2009/11/11 16:34] Greybeard Thinker: so MONO is not my issue.
[2009/11/11 16:34] Nebadon Izumi: ok
[2009/11/11 16:34] Nebadon Izumi: well are you just seeing messages on the console?
[2009/11/11 16:34] Ernie Seriman: I'm tempted to make a fuzzy barely rezzed t-shirt
[2009/11/11 16:34] Nebadon Izumi: or actually having issues in world as well
[2009/11/11 16:34] Monerda Skute: hehe Ernie
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: most of the CSJ2k messages you should just ignore
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: they are just verbose debugging messages
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: warnings
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: not errors
[2009/11/11 16:35] Greybeard Thinker: in world Neb rebakes are not coming through
[2009/11/11 16:35] Dave Coyle: ernie: hehe
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: what viewer?
[2009/11/11 16:35] Greybeard Thinker: Hippo always.
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: k
[2009/11/11 16:35] Adelle Fitzgerald: Greybeard: [16:34] Adelle Fitzgerald: its manifesting itself mainly in avatar bakes not rezzing properly, but that is really an opensim issue, not an osgrid issue
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: Greybeard after the meeting ping me
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: i have some suggestions
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: for making things better
[2009/11/11 16:35] Greybeard Thinker: tx Neb
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: there are some things you can do with windows
[2009/11/11 16:35] Nebadon Izumi: to make assets faster
[2009/11/11 16:36] Nebadon Izumi: async vs sync
[2009/11/11 16:36] Ernie Seriman: do textures come to the viewer by udp or tcp?
[2009/11/11 16:36] Greybeard Thinker: ty.
[2009/11/11 16:36] Nebadon Izumi: right now UDP
[2009/11/11 16:36] Nebadon Izumi: the goal is to get to HTTP texture pipeline
[2009/11/11 16:36] Ernie Seriman nods
[2009/11/11 16:36] Greybeard Thinker: LLUDP complains from time to time on console too
[2009/11/11 16:36] Greybeard Thinker: not as bad as last wek.
[2009/11/11 16:36] Starky Rubble: yep
[2009/11/11 16:36] Nebadon Izumi: its mostly debugging messages
[2009/11/11 16:36] Greybeard Thinker: cool Neb.
[2009/11/11 16:36] Nebadon Izumi: LLUDP is noisy
[2009/11/11 16:36] Kally Rakan: not really much you can do about that with UDP
[2009/11/11 16:36] Greybeard Thinker: hreeheheh
[2009/11/11 16:37] Starky Rubble: Is it time for a new Q?
[2009/11/11 16:37] Greybeard Thinker: osgrid is my only grid
[2009/11/11 16:37] Nebadon Izumi: ya that warnings on console are ok
[2009/11/11 16:37] Dave Coyle: starky: sure
[2009/11/11 16:37] Nebadon Izumi: anyone who is interested in hearing about how you can tweak opensim to run better under windows servers
[2009/11/11 16:37] Nebadon Izumi: hang around after meeting
[2009/11/11 16:37] Greybeard Thinker: I put hjeart and soul here best way ba non coder can.
[2009/11/11 16:37] Trex Blessed: mind is numb from the tech talk
[2009/11/11 16:37] Ernie Seriman: http textures would rock, then places like us where there are a bunch of people in a classroom on one sim could share a http proxy cache
[2009/11/11 16:37] Nebadon Izumi: i will explain what to do
[2009/11/11 16:38] Oddball Otoole: Will that be in the log too?
[2009/11/11 16:38] Nebadon Izumi: we can append it on if its not
[2009/11/11 16:38] Starky Rubble: I have noticed a number of megas intermixed in the core areas recently. In fact I just made one. What's the current state of affairs and best pracxtices thunking?
[2009/11/11 16:38] Nebadon Izumi: it will be posted on the osgrid wiki
[2009/11/11 16:38] Oddball Otoole: ok, ty Neb.
[2009/11/11 16:38] Dave Coyle: starky: regarding location? or operation?
[2009/11/11 16:39] Greybeard Thinker: being the canny kind I log all chat to my comp hard disk anyway, lol.
[2009/11/11 16:39] Starky Rubble: all of it I spose... I have just stared playing with it
[2009/11/11 16:39] Starky Rubble: originall it was thpought best to hie to the boonies with megas
[2009/11/11 16:40] Dave Coyle: location? wherever. though crossing into a mega at any point other than the SW corner is a bit hairy.
[2009/11/11 16:40] Oddball Otoole: i'm not gonna make it to the end, bedtime for Oddball.
[2009/11/11 16:40] Dave Coyle: g'night oddball
[2009/11/11 16:40] Greybeard Thinker: good point there Starky
[2009/11/11 16:40] Monerda Skute: g'night Oddy
[2009/11/11 16:40] Starky Rubble: G'nite
[2009/11/11 16:40] Eryn Galen: night Oddy
[2009/11/11 16:40] Adelle Fitzgerald: night Oddy, tc
[2009/11/11 16:40] Greybeard Thinker: night Oddy
[2009/11/11 16:40] Dave Coyle: operation? i think OARs are still an issue being worked on
[2009/11/11 16:40] Fernando Oliveira: night oddy
[2009/11/11 16:40] Oddball Otoole: i'll read the rest of the meeting later.
[2009/11/11 16:40] Oddball Otoole: bye bye and take care!
[2009/11/11 16:41] Nebadon Izumi: ya OAR and IAR are not in anyway final
[2009/11/11 16:41] Greybeard Thinker: if it's grid stability may I suggest the same about home DSL operators?
[2009/11/11 16:41] Monerda Skute: tc ;)
[2009/11/11 16:41] Adelle Fitzgerald: the one thing to bear in mind with megas atm is they are still in the experimental stage
[2009/11/11 16:41] Dave Coyle: greybeard: suggest what?
[2009/11/11 16:41] Starky Rubble: Adelle, aren't we all?
[2009/11/11 16:41] Monerda Skute: I are one
[2009/11/11 16:41] Greybeard Thinker: they do seem to upset the big iron server for some reason
[2009/11/11 16:42] Greybeard Thinker: remember the fun Retro Dan gave us?
[2009/11/11 16:42] Adelle Fitzgerald: though i havent herad of snything going badly wrong with them, its still best to be cautious, so make sure you back up your database as i dont believe OARS work fully with them yet
[2009/11/11 16:42] Starky Rubble: you mean with border Xings and such?
[2009/11/11 16:42] Greybeard Thinker: a lot of my region probs went away soon as Vince moved Vsinc last week.
[2009/11/11 16:42] Kally Rakan: the difference between megas and home dsl regions is that megas can cause some problems for the surrounding regions
[2009/11/11 16:42] Kally Rakan: like the region crossing mentioned earlier
[2009/11/11 16:42] Dave Coyle: a sim has to talk to its neighbors. and if its neighbors are on a slow connection with high latency, yes, that could cause issues.
[2009/11/11 16:43] Greybeard Thinker: and tp to and from as well
[2009/11/11 16:43] Monerda Skute: my neighbors haven't reported any issues so far
[2009/11/11 16:43] Greybeard Thinker: Starky and I had some fun with his new Mega the other day eh mate?
[2009/11/11 16:43] Greybeard Thinker: lol.
[2009/11/11 16:43] Starky Rubble: Dave: is that condition worse with Megas?
[2009/11/11 16:43] Dave Coyle: adam mentioned during OSG2B that it would be nice to have self-segregating areas (if people wanted that) based on what kind of machine/network you had
[2009/11/11 16:43] Starky Rubble: yes we did
[2009/11/11 16:43] Dave Coyle: currently, though, we don't have the tools to do so
[2009/11/11 16:43] Dave Coyle: starky: yes, it's worse with megas
[2009/11/11 16:43] Starky Rubble: right
[2009/11/11 16:44] Greybeard Thinker: good idea Dave.
[2009/11/11 16:44] Dave Coyle: or, i should say, i *believe* it's worse with megas
[2009/11/11 16:44] Kally Rakan: a 4x4 mega has 12 neighbours compared to only 4 for a normal region
[2009/11/11 16:44] Greybeard Thinker: I moved mine to the 8000 lines to be a bit more stable
[2009/11/11 16:44] Starky Rubble: Ok I have another minor Q in that vein
[2009/11/11 16:44] Dave Coyle: go for it
[2009/11/11 16:44] Kally Rakan: so it likely has a lot more neighbour traffic
[2009/11/11 16:45] Kally Rakan: 16 I mean :P
[2009/11/11 16:45] Gialana Questi: wow its nite time in here already, lol
[2009/11/11 16:45] Starky Rubble: If I meger DeepCool and FoolHill into a mega with DeepCool the (SW) master region what, in theory, happens if someone TPs to FoolHill or searches it?
[2009/11/11 16:45] Starky Rubble: merge^
[2009/11/11 16:46] Fernando Oliveira: but if you have 4 regions, isn't the same having a big region?
[2009/11/11 16:46] Fernando Oliveira: about traffic?
[2009/11/11 16:46] Dave Coyle: my experience has been that i'd tp to it, then immediately get tp'd to the SW region
[2009/11/11 16:46] Starky Rubble: I see
[2009/11/11 16:46] Kally Rakan: in my experience, you arrive at FoolHill for a couple seconds then automatically teleport again to the *same location* but in the DeepCool region
[2009/11/11 16:46] Adelle Fitzgerald: Starky, its not recommended at all to merge already existing regions, object coords go bonkers
[2009/11/11 16:47] Eryn Galen: Hi Hiro :)
[2009/11/11 16:47] Hiro Protagonist: hiya
[2009/11/11 16:47] Monerda Skute: hi Hiro
[2009/11/11 16:47] Greybeard Thinker: Hi Hiro San.
[2009/11/11 16:47] Adelle Fitzgerald: but to answer your question, the map will see them as seperate regions
[2009/11/11 16:47] Kally Rakan: it's like the mega is an overlay on the other regions and you get punted to it from the normal region
[2009/11/11 16:47] Kally Rakan: hi hiro
[2009/11/11 16:47] Adelle Fitzgerald: just like running two regions on one instance of opensim
[2009/11/11 16:47] Gialana Questi: thanks fernando
[2009/11/11 16:47] Adelle Fitzgerald: hi Hiro
[2009/11/11 16:47] Fernando Oliveira: yw
[2009/11/11 16:47] Starky Rubble: Ok... then does delete-region clear a region as tho it never existed?
[2009/11/11 16:47] Hiro Protagonist: Hello everyone :) do continue ;)
[2009/11/11 16:48] Starky Rubble: OK Hiro lol
[2009/11/11 16:48] Gialana Questi: this is neat being here with lots of peole
[2009/11/11 16:48] Gialana Questi: people
[2009/11/11 16:48] Nebadon Izumi: :)
[2009/11/11 16:48] Dave Coyle: yes
[2009/11/11 16:48] Monerda Skute: it sure is Gialana
[2009/11/11 16:48] Dave Coyle: i agree
[2009/11/11 16:48] Adelle Fitzgerald: im not sure Starky, i don't use the console commands for creating and removing regions
[2009/11/11 16:48] Greybeard Thinker: advice I've been given is NOT to tp to Mega
[2009/11/11 16:48] Greybeard Thinker: but to direct log
[2009/11/11 16:48] Gialana Questi: put all our heads together and have somethign really great here!
[2009/11/11 16:48] Nebadon Izumi: you can tp to the most SW region
[2009/11/11 16:48] Greybeard Thinker: and log out again
[2009/11/11 16:48] Greybeard Thinker: for the time at least.
[2009/11/11 16:49] Nebadon Izumi: but dont i dont suggest TP'ing to anything but the primary region in a mega
[2009/11/11 16:49] Gialana Questi: not to tp to mega?
[2009/11/11 16:49] Adelle Fitzgerald: you should be fine tping to and from the very SW region
[2009/11/11 16:49] Gialana Questi: whats at mega
[2009/11/11 16:49] Nebadon Izumi: mega region
[2009/11/11 16:49] Starky Rubble: Is primary the word then?
[2009/11/11 16:49] Gialana Questi: ahhh
[2009/11/11 16:49] Nebadon Izumi: regions larger than 256m without borders
[2009/11/11 16:49] Greybeard Thinker: advice from Hiro San about his.
[2009/11/11 16:49] Gialana Questi: i see
[2009/11/11 16:49] Gialana Questi: those seem pretty neat though
[2009/11/11 16:49] Nebadon Izumi: well its safe to TP to the SW region
[2009/11/11 16:49] Nebadon Izumi: but i suggest direct login in for best results
[2009/11/11 16:50] Dave Coyle: Deep Plaza, for example, is 1km x 1km
[2009/11/11 16:50] Greybeard Thinker: wow
[2009/11/11 16:50] Gialana Questi: i love how we can cross sims to get to other regions too
[2009/11/11 16:50] Adelle Fitzgerald: Vehicle Load Test is also 1km x 1km
[2009/11/11 16:50] Starky Rubble: yes - we had success TPing and border Xing from my primary
[2009/11/11 16:50] Gialana Questi: i think it will be great for commerce in the future
[2009/11/11 16:51] Gialana Questi: more like the real world here
[2009/11/11 16:51] Greybeard Thinker: someone not understand econopmy here?
[2009/11/11 16:51] Gialana Questi: with a p?
[2009/11/11 16:51] Gialana Questi: lol
[2009/11/11 16:51] Greybeard Thinker: well?
[2009/11/11 16:51] Monerda Skute: lol
[2009/11/11 16:51] Greybeard Thinker: Lysdexic fingers first thying in the morning sorry.
[2009/11/11 16:51] Kally Rakan: I believe adam frisby has had a 1km by 8km mega
[2009/11/11 16:51] Greybeard Thinker: see? LOL.
[2009/11/11 16:52] Monerda Skute: hehe Grey
[2009/11/11 16:52] Gialana Questi: lol
[2009/11/11 16:52] Fernando Oliveira: wow that needs a big net connection
[2009/11/11 16:52] Starky Rubble: Dyslexics untie!
[2009/11/11 16:52] Adelle Fitzgerald: not really fernando
[2009/11/11 16:52] Greybeard Thinker: HEHEHE
[2009/11/11 16:52] Gialana Questi: haha
[2009/11/11 16:52] Hiro Protagonist: http://www.adamfrisby.com/blog/2009/10/dtl-paypal-or-how-you-can-transfer-money-in-a-virtual-world-without-significant-risk/ ftw
[2009/11/11 16:52] Monerda Skute: lol Starky
[2009/11/11 16:52] Key Gruin: LOL
[2009/11/11 16:53] Trex Blessed: any status on the orientation island project?
[2009/11/11 16:53] Adelle Fitzgerald: it will need a good net connection, but really requires a lot of RAM
[2009/11/11 16:53] Greybeard Thinker: agrees with Adelle.
[2009/11/11 16:53] Fernando Oliveira: humm good to hear that
[2009/11/11 16:53] Kally Rakan: network bandwidth depends more on the number of avis+visible prims+visible textures
[2009/11/11 16:54] Starky Rubble: My three region mega hums along at ~65MB with very little traffic
[2009/11/11 16:54] Adelle Fitzgerald: also i believe it takes quite a few minutes to start up, so a good fast machine would be required, if you wanted it to load fast
[2009/11/11 16:54] Starky Rubble: Yeppers to that Adelle
[2009/11/11 16:54] Fernando Oliveira: thats because my 4regions are allocating near 256M
[2009/11/11 16:54] Adelle Fitzgerald: a region itself will use ~20mb each when empty
[2009/11/11 16:54] Adelle Fitzgerald: with an overhead on the opensim instance
[2009/11/11 16:55] Greybeard Thinker: I run 9 default regions in single sim using about 500 Meg of RAM including OS and it's fine.
[2009/11/11 16:55] Gialana Questi: i need to get mine on a vps server soon, i got signed up with fsckvps.com but need the info now to get connected to them
[2009/11/11 16:55] Greybeard Thinker: got 1Gbps connection.
[2009/11/11 16:55] Bolle Zijde: I have a question.
[2009/11/11 16:55] Greybeard Thinker: and 1Gb swap space.
[2009/11/11 16:55] Dave Coyle: bolle: go ahead and ask
[2009/11/11 16:56] Gialana Questi: my pc has 8gb so its humming along, but i have the feeling i want more, lol
[2009/11/11 16:56] Bolle Zijde: Would you like a newspaper in OSGrid?
[2009/11/11 16:56] Starky Rubble: hee
[2009/11/11 16:56] Greybeard Thinker: was one called The Ruth.
[2009/11/11 16:56] Starky Rubble: Anybody seen Aly lately?
[2009/11/11 16:56] Dave Coyle: bolle: i like the idea. there was The Ruth, but it only lasted 4 issues.
[2009/11/11 16:56] Dave Coyle: Aly logged in a couple days ago
[2009/11/11 16:56] Gialana Questi: that sounds nice i owned a magazine in sl, but was alot of hard work
[2009/11/11 16:56] Starky Rubble: cool
[2009/11/11 16:56] Dave Coyle: i haven't seen here though in months
[2009/11/11 16:56] Hiro Protagonist: I spoke with Aly the other day
[2009/11/11 16:57] Hiro Protagonist: she didnt sound like she was headed back this way any time soon
[2009/11/11 16:57] Greybeard Thinker: damn.
[2009/11/11 16:57] Starky Rubble: Aly was the edior of The Ruth
[2009/11/11 16:57] Greybeard Thinker: yes
[2009/11/11 16:57] Starky Rubble: editor^
[2009/11/11 16:57] Dave Coyle: there's a lot going on on the grid, and i think a newspaper or some kind would be a good way to find out what's out there
[2009/11/11 16:57] Greybeard Thinker: very good idea
[2009/11/11 16:57] Gialana Questi: poor ruth looks like early woman lucy, lol
[2009/11/11 16:57] Starky Rubble: so are these meetings
[2009/11/11 16:58] Eryn Galen: agrees with Starky
[2009/11/11 16:58] Andress Renault: Hello everyone
[2009/11/11 16:58] Fernando Oliveira: may I sugest about site?
[2009/11/11 16:58] Monerda Skute: hi Andress
[2009/11/11 16:58] Dave Coyle: hi andress
[2009/11/11 16:58] Gialana Questi: yes i like this meeting
[2009/11/11 16:58] Greybeard Thinker: Hi Andress
[2009/11/11 16:58] Dave Coyle: fernando: sure
[2009/11/11 16:58] Gialana Questi: hi andress
[2009/11/11 16:58] Bolle Zijde: Ok we go on then, find writers and editors.
[2009/11/11 16:58] Hiro Protagonist: ruhroh
[2009/11/11 16:58] Fernando Oliveira: I like the wire posting (like twitter)
[2009/11/11 16:58] Gialana Questi: i will contribute alot of stuff to it
[2009/11/11 16:58] Hiro Protagonist: use the poseball itself Andress
[2009/11/11 16:58] Andress Renault: Missed the seat ball
[2009/11/11 16:58] Greybeard Thinker: maybe a good thing for some of the more socially oriented users to get onto?
[2009/11/11 16:59] Fernando Oliveira: there are a way to have an API to do that?
[2009/11/11 16:59] Dave Coyle: fernando: i don't believe there is
[2009/11/11 16:59] Gialana Questi: that i am not sure of in here
[2009/11/11 16:59] Andress Renault waves at folks she knows.
[2009/11/11 16:59] Greybeard Thinker: Gimp the pages, import them, then use Hiro's book script to build the editions?
[2009/11/11 16:59] Dave Coyle: but i haven't looked into it
[2009/11/11 17:00] Dave Coyle: most of the main website is built on elgg
[2009/11/11 17:00] Gialana Questi: too bad i cant have my magazine engine in here, lol
[2009/11/11 17:00] Andress Renault: They have pages available to edit right on the OS site, why not blog it?
[2009/11/11 17:00] Fernando Oliveira: who work with the website?
[2009/11/11 17:00] Dave Coyle: so if elgg has an api (or api plugin) for the wire we could look at it
[2009/11/11 17:00] Greybeard Thinker: points at Neb.
[2009/11/11 17:00] Greybeard Thinker: lol
[2009/11/11 17:00] Hiro Protagonist: Dave is your man
[2009/11/11 17:00] Gialana Questi: blogging is nice
[2009/11/11 17:00] Hiro Protagonist points at Dave
[2009/11/11 17:00] Greybeard Thinker: repoints to Dave?
[2009/11/11 17:00] Kally Rakan: it would be nice to have screens that can display the wire messages and calendar events and so on
[2009/11/11 17:00] Gialana Questi: haha
[2009/11/11 17:00] Dave Coyle points to someone else
[2009/11/11 17:01] Key Gruin agrees with the blog idea
[2009/11/11 17:01] Greybeard Thinker: hehehehe
[2009/11/11 17:01] Greybeard Thinker: yes
[2009/11/11 17:01] Hiro Protagonist: honestly, the website needs a great deal of work
[2009/11/11 17:01] Gialana Questi: maybe a slide show of each of the pages to show a whole story in here
[2009/11/11 17:01] Greybeard Thinker: I used to use the in viewer web browser to domy Tribal Net blogs.
[2009/11/11 17:01] Hiro Protagonist: it's a complex thing though, so not just anyone can hop in there and go
[2009/11/11 17:01] Fernando Oliveira: whar runs on backend the site?
[2009/11/11 17:01] Bolle Zijde: The newspaper will be called: The OS Gazet
[2009/11/11 17:01] Gialana Questi: everyone needs to contribute to make it successful
[2009/11/11 17:01] Dave Coyle: the backend is elgg
[2009/11/11 17:02] Dave Coyle: http://elgg.org
[2009/11/11 17:02] Greybeard Thinker: ty Dave.
[2009/11/11 17:02] Hiro Protagonist: Bolle: you are welcome to poach my blog entries anytime at http://osgrid.blogspot.org
[2009/11/11 17:02] Gialana Questi: can anyone create a slide show gadget to put the pages into?
[2009/11/11 17:02] Andress Renault: Thats a good idea!
[2009/11/11 17:02] Key Gruin: one is already available Gialana
[2009/11/11 17:02] Monerda Skute: hey why is there no Absolut at my table?
[2009/11/11 17:02] Greybeard Thinker: again suggests Hiro's boon script?
[2009/11/11 17:02] Andress Renault laughs
[2009/11/11 17:02] Gialana Questi: i have a slide show i used in sl for my club
[2009/11/11 17:03] Greybeard Thinker: but carefull with page 31, it bites. lol.
[2009/11/11 17:03] Gialana Questi: it was called the Story of Wild Thangs,, lol
[2009/11/11 17:03] Fernando Oliveira: nice !!! i found the page
[2009/11/11 17:03] Hiro Protagonist: There is a book script I made a while back on the osgrid.or/forums
[2009/11/11 17:03] Fernando Oliveira: http://docs.elgg.org/wiki/API
[2009/11/11 17:03] Hiro Protagonist: There is a book script I made a while back on the osgrid.org/forums
[2009/11/11 17:03] Greybeard Thinker: chat twins lol.
[2009/11/11 17:03] Kally Rakan: hiro: .com not .org
[2009/11/11 17:03] Key Gruin: the one that Aly used is pretty good
[2009/11/11 17:03] Greybeard Thinker: yes
[2009/11/11 17:04] Greybeard Thinker: it is.
[2009/11/11 17:04] Greybeard Thinker: that is a book script too.
[2009/11/11 17:04] Starky Rubble: yep
[2009/11/11 17:04] Gialana Questi: great so just put the pages on that
[2009/11/11 17:04] Greybeard Thinker: in UUID form.
[2009/11/11 17:04] Monerda Skute: lol Skyy ok
[2009/11/11 17:04] Nebs Cherry Martini with Orange Slice whispers: Another route to Nirvana
[2009/11/11 17:04] Gialana Questi: and try to get subscribers to send them to
[2009/11/11 17:05] Gialana Questi: use a kiosk to get subscribers
