Saturday Q&A for January 11th, 2025

From OSgrid Wiki

[11:47 AM] albertlr Landar: Well sorry but no one has show up for todays meeting at Hurliman, so am going to quit soon.

[11:48 AM] albertlr Landar: But before I go the re-configuring of the assets continues. And we are getting closer to its conclusion. But again a disclaimer to everyone, please realize that some of your assets, particularly textures may not be available until the process is completed.
[11:49 AM] albertlr Landar: So we ask for your patience while the process completes.
[11:52 AM] albertlr Landar: I ran into a couple of problems myself in that I could not log into OSgrid while it was in fact on-line. I discovered that my LG monitor which I had recently purchased had a lan connection which I had connected. And it was acting like an additional lan connection to the Internet. Apparently it would connect for uploading, but would not connect for downloading. Some times my viewers would connect to it, and then crash because it could not properly connect to the OSgrid servers. I found by disconnecting it that it solved the problem, Because of it my computer had two ip addresses, one worked the other did not. So warning if you have a lan connection on your monitor do not use it.
[11:53 AM] albertlr Landar: I also decided to automate my upgrades for my var regions on Osgrid. So I set up bat files to allow me to make automatic back ups of the ini files to new instances of OSGrdi.
[11:57 AM] albertlr Landar: After a lot of experimentation, I felt that using Xcopy to do this was much easier than using RoboCopy. First RoboCopy has a lot of extensions to its commands. I found that using Xcopy was much easier to use. Also when it runs in the command window, it gives you three options
[11:58 AM] albertlr Landar: Yes, No and All
[11:59 AM] albertlr Landar: The All option is to copy a file with obytes one, or to copy all of a directory including subdirectories. Using the Yes option allows you to confirm that the copy is successful. I could not find a similar option for RoboCopy.
[11:59 AM] albertlr Landar: So here is an example of one one in the bat file from one of my var regions:
[12:00 PM] albertlr Landar:

echo on
Xcopy F:\Your-Gride/Region-Name\init\GridCommon.ini F:\Your-Grid/Region-Name\bin\config-include
Xcopy F:\Your-Grid/Region-Name\init\osslDefaultEnable.ini F:\Your-Grid/Region-Name\bin\config-include
Xcopy F:\Your-Grid/Region-Name\init\OpenSim.ini F:\Your-Grid/Region-Name\bin
Xcopy F:\Your-Grid/Region-Name\init\Regions.ini F:\Your-Grid/Region-Name\bin\Regions
Xcopy F:\Your-Grid/Region-Name\init\Robust.ini F:\Your-Grid-/Region-Name\bin
Pausebin

[12:02 PM] albertlr Landar: Basically the process is for each ini file is to use an xcopy command to copy that from its home directory to the new installation directory on your computer.
[12:02 PM] albertlr Landar: So the process is the following: xcopy "c:\directory 1\myfile" "c:\directory 2\myfile". Use quotes if you have spaces in the file or directory name.
[12:02 PM] albertlr Landar: I also used the same process to set up updates for my home grids using the same structure.
[12:03 PM] albertlr Landar: So I found that this makes the process of installing a new version much easier, and helps to avoid making mistakes in the process.
[12:04 PM] albertlr Landar: Just remember to set up a directory called Init or something like that and put all your ini files in it for future updates. Also review your ini files for any changes you may need to make after each update.
[12:05 PM] albertlr Landar: Well will be back on Feburary 8th for the next Saturday Q&A.
[12:06 PM] albertlr Landar: Good day...
