New User Information
- Trash - To empty your Trash folder, it's important to clear it both in your viewer and on the OSgrid website for full inventory consistency. Login to the website, go to My Account, and you'll find a link on the left side of the page to empty trash. Remember to clear your viewer's trash/cache as well (usually in Preferences > Network & Cache > Clear Cache).
- Regions - If you are no longer running a region that is still registered to your avatar and appears on the map, you can remove (purge) it via the website. Login to website, select Account > My Profile, and find the option to purge regions.
- Partnering - To formally partner with another avatar within the grid (this adds a "Partner" label on your profile), login to the website, select My Account > Profile, scroll down to the "Change Partner" section, add their avatar name, and they will receive an email notification to accept the partnership request.
- Where to Socialize? - LBSA Plaza (often simply called LBSA in chat) is generally considered OSgrid's primary social hub. You'll often find friendly residents there ready to chat at various times throughout the day. Tip: Did you know you can click on any of the highlighted plaza images or names directly from your viewer's login screen to automatically teleport there after logging in?
- Where to Shop? - For shopping, Wright Plaza is a major destination where you can find a wide variety of items like clothing, homes, vehicles, and other goods. It's also home to the Travel Office, which can help you discover many other interesting places and regions to visit across the grid.
- Need a Place to Live? - If you're new and looking for land for a home, you can apply for a free plot at one of our Resident Plazas. These are managed plots and are a great way to get started with land ownership. If you're considering running your own simulator (a private region), tutorials are available on the main wiki, but please note that this requires some technical understanding to set up and maintain a server. Offers for free land from individual hosts or other residents can often be found discussed on the OSgrid Forums.
- Cannot Rez or Unpack Items? - If you're having trouble rezzing items from your inventory or unpacking boxes, you might need to be in a sandbox region. OSgrid has various public sandboxes designed for building, testing, and unpacking items. These sandboxes may run different physics engines. To find them, just open your map in the viewer and search for "Sandbox". Keep in mind sandboxes are public, and items might be automatically returned after a period of time.
- Avatar Appearance Issues - Sometimes, your avatar might not load correctly, appearing as a default "Ruth/Roth" avatar or a simple "blob" shape. This is a common glitch! Common first steps to try fixing this include re-baking your avatar (often found in the viewer's Advanced or Develop menus), clearing your viewer's cache (in Preferences > Network & Cache), and re-applying or replacing your outfit. If these quick fixes don't work, don't hesitate to ask for help from experienced residents.
- Understanding Teleport Issues - OSgrid is a decentralized grid, with many regions hosted by individuals on their personal computers. Because these might not always be online or have varying internet speeds and computer hardware, sometimes teleports can fail, or regions might load slowly or have performance issues. This is a normal aspect of decentralized grids, and your experience ("your mileage may vary") can depend on the host of the region you are visiting.
- Finding Active Regions - To see which of your friends are online and where they are located, you can login to the osgrid.org website. You can also use external OpenSim directories that list active public regions across many grids, including OSgrid. Opensimworld is a popular example.
- Staying Updated - To keep informed about what's happening in OSgrid:
- Join the official OSgrid Community Group on Facebook. This is a great place for residents to announce their events, and official OSgrid events are always posted there first.
- New releases and updates are typically announced via OSgrid's Twitter account and often appear directly on your viewer login page under announcements.
- Official grid announcements are posted on news.osgrid.org.
- More Web Information - Are there other places online for OpenSim/OSgrid information? Yes! You might find this "startpage" helpful for collecting various links. When looking for help or tutorials online, especially for troubleshooting, it's very important to check the date of the information you find. Since the OpenSim platform has existed for over 10 years and is constantly evolving, older guides might contain outdated instructions or information that is no longer accurate.
- Getting In-world Help - Don't hesitate to ask questions or look for assistance directly in-world from experienced residents. LBSA Plaza and Wright Plaza are excellent starting points for chatting with others who can often help with basic problems (like avatar glitches or getting started), shopping, and finding freebies or information centers. Residents are generally friendly and willing to guide newcomers.
- Going solo ? - It's 2026. AI assistants like Gemini, Grok, and GPT know LSL, they can help you write complex scripts with menu's and whatnot. They know Opensimulator, and its viewer truncation. You can connect API's to NPC'sand do really interesting things with some AI help, even if you're not an ex-SL veteran.
